New Release from SJ Himes - Mastering the Flames

Congrats to SJ Himes on the release of
Mastering the Flames.
Check out that hot cover!

Mastering the Flames (The Beacon Hill Sorcerer Book 4)
by SJ Himes
Kellie Dennis (Illustrator)
October 4, 2019
Guilt-ridden after the massacre of his family, Isaac Salvatore turned to binge drinking to escape the pain. Now twenty-four years old, Isaac is a recovering alcoholic woefully out of practice in the magical arts, leaving his fire affinity hanging on the edge of disaster. After a month of rehab, he returns to Beacon Hill and his family, determined to remain sober, learn to control his magic, and figure out a plan for his life that doesn't involve drinking.

Constantine Batiste is the oldest, most powerful vampire in the city. Born in ancient Gaul, the bastard son of a Celtic king, his long life has been shrouded in tragedy and horrors. Recent mistakes have left him wary and determined to guard his clan from all foes. When two of his clan members fall victim to an ancient evil, he summons the Necromancer of Boston for aid. Accompanying his older brother to the Tower is the handsome young fire mage once wounded by Constantine's arrogance, and their encounter reignites an attraction that burns within both Constantine and Isaac.

The answer to who is targeting the vampires of Boston is buried in the dark, early days of Constantine's transition to an immortal life. Isaac finds himself saddled with a painful insight into the evil cutting a swath through the supernatural population of Boston. While his brother, Angel, takes over the hunt to find and stop the threat to the city, Isaac struggles to find a balance between helping his brother and finding his own purpose and place in the world, free from his brother's shadow.

Falling in love wasn't part of his plan, but mastering the flames that burn between him and Constantine soon becomes the most important thing in his life, even as an ancient evil seeks to destroy them.

Mastering the Flames is the fourth book in The Beacon Hill Sorcerer series and is not a standalone. The series should be read in order for maximum enjoyment and understanding of the plot and characters. The Content Advisory is on the Copyright Page and can be seen by downloading a sample or using the Look Inside feature. 130k words.

Bitter Sweet (Book 1): A Doxie Diaries Tale Paperback
by Adrienne Wilder (Author), Inochihime (Illustrator)

Paperback: 25 pages
Jinx is a young god trying to survive the economic collapse that has altered the modern world. His gift, his genetic advantage, is what separates him from the average human. While his talents give him a survivor's edge, immortality can only be guaranteed by the nectar of the ambrosia flower. Ira is a Doxie, a young man born with the ability to produce ambrosia nectar once he consumes the flower. Like any Doxie, he wants nothing more than to serve the gods, and give them the ambrosia that makes them immortal. And if he's really lucky, he will be loved by the god who eventually claims him.

Georgia born and bred, I am an artist, a writer, and a general pain in the ass.

I spend most of my days working on my next book or designing cover art for other writers. For stress relief, I do Olympic lifting and occasionally run (but hate it). I have been in love with writing since I was very young but it wasn't until recently that I decided to pursue it as a profession.

I have experimented in several genres and found that since I identify as male, male romance has been the most comfortable for me to write. I don't discriminate in my books. All characters are fair game. I do, however, prefer a happy ending at some level.

I don't write the standard romance book. Some might even argue that what I write isn't romance at all. Personally, I think of them as love stories, where even in a fantastical world, there are realistic outcomes to the obstacles the characters face.

Chimera: Bound Gods Book 1 French Translation released

Bound Gods #1: The Chimera was released in French! If you have French-speaking friends let them know and ask them to please leave a review there.

Yes! This is a different cover. I am slowly updating some of the Bound Gods covers so they match better. This cover will also replace the English version.

Kaleb Holten’s father’s debt to an* underground group The Association has just been called in, and the man can’t pay the loan. Instead of turning over his wealth, he releases his son and Kaleb finds himself thrown into a world where a class of men see themselves as untouchable. Going so far as to call themselves gods.

After the Great Economic Collapse, there are no laws that cannot be broken. And Kaleb is forced into a ten-year sentence of servitude where he will have no say, no rights, no value and yet be coveted and protected as if he were a priceless treasure.

Leo Roan, has slipped the noose the Association bound him with by breaking his addiction to ambrosia and Kaleb Holten was supposed to be his last assignment as a doxie Master. But something about the boy begins weaving a new net that will not only ensnare him but the conscious darkness inside, that craves pain, agony, suffering, and death.

Update on writing projects

MinionS here. I finally cornered Adrienne and made him give me an update on what he's writing.

Sicari: This is the next book that will release. Adrienne is currently doing the first round of self-edits. I'm looking forward to meeting Marcel, Jacob, Ben, and Sam. Fun fact. Adrienne has been working on this book off and on for four years! Marcel is the most challenging character he has written because he is a sociopath.

Sins of the Father: We refer to this as the "Priest" book. It is about 30% done and has gone through many changes, but I think Adrienne has settled on how this story will go. Dorian is the priest and Aiden is deaf. Writing Aiden has been a challenge for Adrienne because it is hard to show not tell when someone is deaf. But he likes a challenge.

Nox 2: This is about 10% done. The important thing is the plot/mythos has been worked out. So when he starts working on this more it should write quickly.

Sacrifice (Bound Gods 11 and 12): This is the final book (will be divided into two books) in the current Bound Gods arc. This is where lots of gods, doxies, and people will die. Who? *evil laughter* Wouldn't you like to know...me too. Adrienne has told me very little. I don't think he knows who is going to die yet. Book 11 is about 50% done and Book 12 is about 70% done.

Darkest Night: Jeff's story is about 70% done.

Bitter Sweet: the yaoi-style webcomic drama Bound Gods spin-off. It is about a godling named Jinx and a doxie named Ira. There are 42 pages up on Patreon. The comic has started posting on webtoons for free. One page a week.

Chimera Kittens: A funny and smutty comic about Leo and Kaleb. There are 20 pages on Patreon. You can see censored pages at the $1 level. At the end of the comic, all patrons will get an uncensored PDF of the whole thing.
There is also a finished webcomic called Chimera Christmas. Funny and smutty. Who knew the Chimera could do THAT with its tongue...

The audiobook of Nox is out. Kirt Graves is the narrator and does an excellent job!

The print copies of Pandora's Heart have been ordered for patrons at the $7 and up level. There will also be some other goodies coming with them.

Adrienne loves corals. Here is his tank: This is an old picture. He is cleaning and adding to it. I'll post a pic once it's done.

And no post would be complete without a pic of Adrienne's puppy Cinder. She has gotten so big! You can see videos of her in Adrienne's Darkside of the Rainbow FB group along with my new puppy Winter. You can see Finn and Pello's feet too!

I think I covered everything... Adrienne is still suffering from sinus trouble. He's got a new antibiotic so hopefully, he'll feel better soon. If you have any questions, you can ask in the comments or in the FB group. Adrienne will answer...but not about who will die in Sacrifice! *evil laugh*

With each passing hour, Nox fills in the pieces painting an impossible truth. And with each passing hour, both men find themselves inexplicably attracted to each other. Epic by Adrienne Wilder on sale for 99 cents

Epic is on sale for $.99!
Epic is a departure from Adrienne's darker books. You might even call if fluffy! lol.

Epic
by Adrienne Wilder
June 16, 2017
Andrew Atler has learned the hard way, fiction is far better than real life. In his romance novels, the world is safe, predictable, and there is always a happy ending. Best of all, he can safely fall in love and the person will never know. There he can weave a tale of perfect passion plus pay the bills.

Matt Grim flies the colors of Hell’s Legion. When he’s not riding his chopper, he’s working as a bouncer for the Six. Matt’s life consists of drinking, playing in a band, and burning the midnight oil in the dungeon. He lives hard, plays hard, and rides even harder.

Two people who would never be a part of the same EPIC love story.

But sometimes those fairy tale clichés have a way of working magic.

And sometimes…sometimes those happy endings do come true.

by R. Phoenix
July 28, 2019
Van doesn't care if Omar is his fated mate -- or whatever other bullshit the world believes in. He's not going to be trapped in a relationship because the universe says he should be. Worse yet, Van's not a huge fan of overbearing, entitled, pretentious alphas. Tired of living under the rule of alphas, he runs away to Salvus, a city governed by betas... only to discover that having their protection may not be as idyllic as it sounds...

Omar knows his mate hates him -- or at least, Van hates what he is. Even though they have an explosive relationship centered around Omar helping Van through his heats, he still cares enough to agree to take Van to Salvus. But once his mate is gone, he discovers Salvus hides sinister secrets.

*Salvus contains a CLIFFHANGER ending. Its sequel, Escape, has an anticipated release date of early September.*

The Show not Tell Cheat Sheet - Galaxy Con

This weekend I am attending GalaxyCon in Raleigh, NC.
On Friday, July 26 I am giving a panel about Show no Tell. Here are what I'm going to cover in case anyone wants it.

The Show not Tell cheat sheet.

To know what can be shown, ask yourself---
What does your main character see, hear, taste, smell, feel?
What reactions do they observe in the other characters around them?

Actions have consequence---
What are the physical, mental, and sensory responses you would have to particular stimulus? Now apply it to your character.

Bill was cold.

Bill shivered in his coat and blew a warm breath against the tips of his burning fingers.

Show instead of dialog tags----

*With Tags*

“You left your coat at my house,” Jon said. He took off his backpack and removed Jim’s coat from inside.

*Without Tags*

Jon took off his backpack and opened it. “You left your coat at my house.” He removed Jim’s coat and held it out to him.

Get creative to avoid repetition---
Showing that it’s cold.

Mike exhaled a breath of white.
Mike rubbed his hands together.
Mike tucked his hands under his armpits.
“I don’t know where--” Mike’s teeth chattered. “The guy is.”

Don’t overdo it---
Use showing when you want to invest the reader into your character or the situation.

If your character has the ability to fight, show them by how the character fights.

Is your character an expert pickpocket? Show through action.

Is your character an excellent liar and manipulator, are they intimidating in presence? Show it through their behaviors, their choices, the way they set other characters up, and the visual reactions of secondary scene characters.

And sometimes Bob just walks across the room.

PRACTICE---

Like any new technique, it will take time to learn. But don’t give up. Practice with scenes that are not in your current manuscript. Distance yourself from your current work to keep things objective. Or, if you prefer only to practice with what you’re currently writing, then break it down to a page at a time.

Cover Reveal: Don't... Book 4 by Jack L Pyke

Shout out to my friend and fellow writer Jack L Pyke on the cover reveal

From Jack's FB post about the book:
"It's also the crossover world with Lynn Kelling and her guys from the Deliver Us series: Trace, Dare, and Gabe. There have been some serious edits in this, including a new scene with Gray and Elena (really showing Gray's dark side!).

Huge thanks to Adrienne Wilder for this stunning cover art.

And this one is all Gray's pov, and just who he has to wake up..."

In the aftermath of Jack Harrison’s release from the psychiatric unit, Gray Raoul’s innate 'born this way bastard way' instinct is to brutally repay the one responsible for financing Jack and Jan’s torturous psychological reconditioning. But that person is a professional player in their own right, one who knows exactly how to manipulate everyone in Gray’s life. To help negotiate this delicate situation, Gray seeks to contract Trace and his ex-Diadem Dom, Gabriel Hunter. But the more Gray seems to regain control, the clearer it becomes that there’s something not quite right about Jan Richards. As Jan’s world unravels, taking Jack and Gray with it and bringing out one particular deadly player, Gray’s left with one last defence: break Jack down in order to partner up with Martin. But once freed, Martin’s out for retribution of his own, and he wants to get downright personal with Gray.

Complete trust between Master, sub, and lover, between Gray, Jack, and Jan, is about to be tested to the absolute limit.

Migration feaures 300 word speculative flash fiction stories from across the rainbow spectrum, from the minds of the writers of Queer Sci Fi.

Excerpt

Each year, hundreds of writers send in stories for the Queer Sci Fi flash fiction anthology. Here are the opening lines from some of the stories chosen for the 2019 edition – Migration:

“Darkness has substance. It is tangible; different shades within the black, sounds, a taste. It is accompanied by self-awareness of time and thoughts, even when other senses fail.” —Hope for Charity, by Robyn Walker

“The sky has been screaming for five straight days when the shrimps come to take us away. They’ve been boxing up the others and hauling them off. Now they’re here for us, soaking wet, dragging cords and crates behind them.” —Shrimpanzee, Sionnain Bailey

“Allister always had faultless hair. He’d comb and gel it to perfection while gazing in the mirror. One day a pair of eyes stared back.” —Zulu Finds a Home, by Kevin Klehr

“On her sister’s wedding day Ari noticed that one of her ears had migrated to her hand. It was right after her high school crush, Emily, arrived with Cousin Matt.” —Playing It By Ear, Aidee Ladnier

“The wound was fatal. Their vessel wouldn't live much longer. This is what came from leaving loose ends. Frantically they sought out a new vessel to migrate to. “ —The Essence, by L.M. Brown

“That night, we were sitting in the bed of her daddy’s old pickup truck and the radio was playing the best song. We had a pack of cigarettes between us and her hand was almost touching mine. The wheat field was silver in the moonlight. When they came, we weren’t surprised, just disappointed that our time was up already.” —Our Song, by Lauren Ring

“Willow said she was my wife, but I knew it wasn’t her, not the right her, anyway. Sure she looked like her with olive skin and bright pink hair. She even smelled of mango flowers, just like I remembered, but there was something about her smile that was slightly off, something about when she said she loved me that didn’t sit well in my old heart.” — They Said It Would Be Her, by Elizabeth Andre

“Agnes is eight when she first sees the river. Cutting its way through town, the only thing she knows not coated in coal dust. She sticks her toes in, comes home with wet socks and a secret. See, the river hadn’t been there yesterday.” —Stream of Consciousness, by Ziggy Schutz

“Terry twirled in her green synthsilk dress, looked at her reflection, liked what she saw. She felt good in her own skin, for maybe the first time.” —Altball, by RE Andeen

“The thing was in the corner. It had come through the window and had slid down the wall. Scratch went the sound. The noise of a hundred nails clawing at the wood. Nails of white bone. Alex pulled the sheets up quickly, covering every inch of skin and hair in a warm darkness.” —Whose Nightmare, by Jamie Bonomi

If you join my patron they are 28 pages ahead and uncensored. You also will see two other mini-comics (NSFW) along with other art and bonus material from the Bound Gods book series.
*BL (Boys Love)
**BL** Gods walk among us. Men born with gifts, some of which border on supernatural. When they take ambrosia they become immortal. But the flower is addictive, and the bloom is very slow to grow. Doxies produce ambrosia in their bodies once they consume the flower. These beautiful men, serve the gods. They have no rights, yet are the gods' greatest treasure. Jinx has lived on the streets all his life. He never imagined he'd see a Doxie in the flesh.  Let alone have his heart stolen by one.

Every follow on webtoon helps the comic do well. You can also "like" each page to help.
