What's going on and next book update + giveaway

I'm still here. I haven't been active online recently. I thought I would explain why. Nothing horrible, I promise.

I usually work on four or five books at a time. If I get stuck on a plot point in one book, I work on another till I figure out how to fix it. It could be days, weeks, or months before I figure out the problem. Sometimes I scrap most of a book and start again. I wish I could work on one book from start to finish like most writers, but my brain doesn't work that way.

When I finally finish the first draft, it is time to make revisions. I try to stick with the same book during the revision process so I can get it to my editors and then to you. This is when I go into my proverbial dragon's den and disappear online. 

For the last two months, I've been revising a book that might be the death of me. Six years ago (Yes! Six years), I started writing Sicari, a romantic suspense. One of the main characters, Marcel, has turned out to be the most challenging character I have ever written. He is a sociopath, and it is exhausting being in his head. He isn't one of the romantic interests, but everything revolves around Marcel.

But I am so close to the end of my revisions! Sicari is going to be 150K! My editor has been circling me in a predatory manner for weeks, waiting... 

So, that's where I've been. When I hand Sicari over to the editors, I will be free-ish...cause edits. But I will emerge from my den, bask in the sun and get other things done! 

Thank you to all my patrons. I know I haven't been active, and only managing update Chimera Kittens and Bittersweet. I have signed all the books and swag that everyone has been waiting for. Unfortunately, the post offices are slammed right now. Sharon is putting the packages together and addressing them and hopes to mail them the last week of December. I've added extra stuff to make up for the delay.

As soon as I finish Sicari, I will jump back into Nox - book 2, The Darkest Night - Jeff's story, and some other surprises.

Georgia born and bred, I am an artist, a writer, and a general pain in the ass.

I spend most of my days working on my next book or designing cover art for other writers. For stress relief, I do Olympic lifting and occasionally run (but hate it). I have been in love with writing since I was very young but it wasn't until recently that I decided to pursue it as a profession.

I have experimented in several genres and found that since I identify as male, male romance has been the most comfortable for me to write. I don't discriminate in my books. All characters are fair game. I do, however, prefer a happy ending at some level.

I don't write the standard romance book. Some might even argue that what I write isn't romance at all. Personally, I think of them as love stories, where even in a fantastical world, there are realistic outcomes to the obstacles the characters face.

Update on writing projects

MinionS here. I finally cornered Adrienne and made him give me an update on what he's writing.

Sicari: This is the next book that will release. Adrienne is currently doing the first round of self-edits. I'm looking forward to meeting Marcel, Jacob, Ben, and Sam. Fun fact. Adrienne has been working on this book off and on for four years! Marcel is the most challenging character he has written because he is a sociopath.

Sins of the Father: We refer to this as the "Priest" book. It is about 30% done and has gone through many changes, but I think Adrienne has settled on how this story will go. Dorian is the priest and Aiden is deaf. Writing Aiden has been a challenge for Adrienne because it is hard to show not tell when someone is deaf. But he likes a challenge.

Nox 2: This is about 10% done. The important thing is the plot/mythos has been worked out. So when he starts working on this more it should write quickly.

Sacrifice (Bound Gods 11 and 12): This is the final book (will be divided into two books) in the current Bound Gods arc. This is where lots of gods, doxies, and people will die. Who? *evil laughter* Wouldn't you like to know...me too. Adrienne has told me very little. I don't think he knows who is going to die yet. Book 11 is about 50% done and Book 12 is about 70% done.

Darkest Night: Jeff's story is about 70% done.

Bitter Sweet: the yaoi-style webcomic drama Bound Gods spin-off. It is about a godling named Jinx and a doxie named Ira. There are 42 pages up on Patreon. The comic has started posting on webtoons for free. One page a week.

Chimera Kittens: A funny and smutty comic about Leo and Kaleb. There are 20 pages on Patreon. You can see censored pages at the $1 level. At the end of the comic, all patrons will get an uncensored PDF of the whole thing. 

There is also a finished webcomic called Chimera Christmas. Funny and smutty. Who knew the Chimera could do THAT with its tongue...

The audiobook of Nox is out. Kirt Graves is the narrator and does an excellent job!

On Friday, July 26 I am giving a panel about Show no Tell. Here are what I'm going to cover in case anyone wants it.

The Show not Tell cheat sheet. 

To know what can be shown, ask yourself---
What does your main character see, hear, taste, smell, feel?
What reactions do they observe in the other characters around them?

Actions have consequence---
What are the physical, mental, and sensory responses you would have to particular stimulus? Now apply it to your character.

Bill was cold.

Bill shivered in his coat and blew a warm breath against the tips of his burning fingers.

Show instead of dialog tags----

*With Tags*

“You left your coat at my house,” Jon said. He took off his backpack and removed Jim’s coat from inside.

*Without Tags*

Jon took off his backpack and opened it. “You left your coat at my house.” He removed Jim’s coat and held it out to him.

Get creative to avoid repetition---
Showing that it’s cold.

Mike exhaled a breath of white.
Mike rubbed his hands together.
Mike tucked his hands under his armpits.
“I don’t know where--” Mike’s teeth chattered. “The guy is.”

Don’t overdo it---
Use showing when you want to invest the reader into your character or the situation.

If your character has the ability to fight, show them by how the character fights.

Is your character an expert pickpocket? Show through action.

Is your character an excellent liar and manipulator, are they intimidating in presence? Show it through their behaviors, their choices, the way they set other characters up, and the visual reactions of secondary scene characters.

And sometimes Bob just walks across the room.

PRACTICE---

Like any new technique, it will take time to learn. But don’t give up. Practice with scenes that are not in your current manuscript. Distance yourself from your current work to keep things objective. Or, if you prefer only to practice with what you’re currently writing, then break it down to a page at a time.
